Right way of doing Right: Direct our contributions through the right channel

Many of us have been disturbed by the devastating floods that have wrecked the Southern state of Kerala in recent weeks. We believe time has come to contribute from our end towards flood relief programs being organized by the State Government of Kerala.

As a humanitarian gesture, we urge you all to break religious/ cast/ creed barriers and contribute all you can- monetarily or through kind. Please be informed that the state and central governments are fully aware of the regions that require utmost and timely assistance. We therefore urge you to route all the contributions you wish to make towards flood relief through the Government or Government specified agencies and not through religious institutions or other religious bodies. Please visit donation.cmdrf.kerala.gov.in to contribute.

As a citizen donating towards this noble cause, you have every right to know how the fund was utilized if it has been directed through the Govt. Most people feel donation made to the government may not reach people it is meant for or some part of it may get misused or swindled. The Govt. is the most accountable and it’s spendings are strictly monitored by the CAG. It is also part of our moral responsibility to direct our contributions through the right channel.

There have been many cases where charity collected by groups ended up being distributed to their own community / caste / creed / linguistic sect or known people and this may end up in discrimination. This is never good for a secular society and can only increase divide among people. Most often, groups distributing also benefit from it.

As a citizen receiving aid routed through the Govt, one exercises his right to it and will accept all contributions wholeheartedly as opposed to ‘charity’ offered by institutions or individuals.
